How do you build one of the finest golf courses in Latin America on a tropical island paradise while safeguarding the environment? The answer lies in careful planning, personal involvement and commitment and ongoing liaison with the environmental authorities.
In a wide ranging interview Maxime Navarre, the CEO of Grupo Viveros, explained the steps that have been taken to ensure that the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, will offer not only a challenging but enjoyable golfing experience, with unrivalled ocean views from almost every hole, but will also remain environmentally sustainable, and protect the surrounding ocean. All of which gives added value to home owners on an exceptional island.
The course, now under construction under the personal ongoing supervision of Jack Nicklaus, has been carved out through tropical jungle with the attention to detail that a concerned management team in tandem with a golfing master can provide. Nothing has been overlooked from creating spots where air can flow through, to ensuring that the golfing challenges are not overwhelming.
To ensure that the multiple plant species of the island are protected a team of ten workers carefully removes trees from the future fairways to a newly established tree nursery, where for every tree cut down, another will be planted and multiple replacements will be grown and made available to home owners whose homes will occupy only 15 percent of their property. The speed with which plants in the tropics grow, will be a pleasant surprise to those from northern climates. |

En una entrevista con Maxime Navarre, el Gerente General de Grupo Viveros, explicó las medidas que se han tomado para asegurarse de que la cancha de golf de la firma de Jack Nicklaus, ofrecerá una experiencia golfistica, no sólo desafiante pero agradable, con vistas incomparables al mar de casi cada hoyo, pero también seguir siendo ambientalmente sostenible, y proteja el océano circundante, el cual da valor agregado a los dueños de casas en una isla excepcional.

Every golf course needs large amounts of water to maintain its pristine look. The Viveros course will store water in specially created reservoirs. Run off from the daily watering will be returned to a Canadian developed water treatment plant, before being re-used. There will be no overflow into the ocean.
Throughout the construction and use of the course, the protection of the environment will be a prime concern for Grupo Viveros, says Maxime, and no modifications will be initiated without previous approval from ANAM, Panama’s environmental protection agency, which is liaising on a daily basis with the management team.
After the first walking of the course by Jack Nicklaus, full time work started in January by the time the rainy season arrives in May, the initial fairways will have been seeded, and the new golfing pearl of the Pacific will be awaiting its first challengers by years end. The 18th hole will be completed in 2011, but as the first nine are completed and
extended, the initial clubhouse will be readied, and extended along with the last nine and the arrival of new home owners.

It is anticipated that there will be an exchange playing program for island residents who might want to visit other prestigious clubs in Latin America.
Meanwhile Isla Viveros continues to attract owners from around the world including the USA, Canada, France, Russia, Belgium and Luxembourg.
Panama, with its stable economy and growth trajectory in a world facing an economic crisis, is becoming increasingly more interesting to European investors, including Russia. In fact the recent growth of the Russian expatriate population on the isthmus, has led to the launching of a Russian language magazine in Panama city and Maxime is planning to visit Moscow during an upcoming European tour.
Construction of the Marina, which will take craft up to 200 ft in length, is moving ahead on schedule, and in a couple of months will receive its first guests. It will be completed in 2009 with room for 100 Craft All of this while work is underway on the planning and construction of hotels, shopping, recreation and social centers, and a world class restaurant.
There are also some changes to the angle of the island’s main runaway, to allow for the development of the tree nursery. The initial extension of the runway was schedule to be part in the ocean (100meter on North side). To reduce the environmental impact the developer decided to change the scenario, the future runway will still have 6000ft and fully adapted for jets.
The outstanding pearl of the Las Perlas archipelago is emerging from its shell.

Mientras tanto Isla Viveros continúa atrayendo a personas interesadas en comprar, de alrededor del mundo incluyendo los EE.UU., Canadá, Francia, Rusia, Bélgica y Luxemburgo.
Panamá, con su estable economía y el crecimiento en un mundo que hace frente a una crisis económica, está llegando a ser cada vez más interesante a los inversionistas europeos, incluyendo Rusia. De hecho el crecimiento reciente de la población expatriada rusa en el istmo, ha volcado la lengua rusa en la ciudad de Panamá. Maxime está planeando visitar Moscú durante un próximo viaje a Europa.
La construcción del la Marina, con amarres de hasta 200 pies en longitud, se está moviendo a dentro del tiempo estipulado, y en un par de meses recibirá a sus primeros huéspedes. Será terminado en 2009 con amares para 100 botes, todo esto, mientras que se trabaja en el planeamiento y la construcción de hoteles, centro comercial, centros sociales y un restaurante de clase mundial.
Hay también algunos cambios en el ángulo de la pista aérea principal de la isla. La extensión inicial iba a ser parte en el océano (100 metros en el lado del norte). Para reducir las consecuencias para el medio ambiente, el desarrollador decidio no seguir este panorama, la pista tendrá 6000 pies y será adaptada completamente para los jets.

No name is more synonymous with greatness in the sport of golf than the name Jack Nicklaus, and no single person has changed the face of the sport more than Jack Nicklaus – the player, the designer, and the good-will ambassador.
Jack, 68, has been named “Golfer of the Century” or “Golfer of the Millennium” by almost every major golf publication in the world. He was also named Individual Male Athlete of the Century by Sports Illustrated, and one of the 10 Greatest Athletes of the Century by ESPN.
The legacy Jack has left as a player, can be rivaled only by the legacy he is leaving as a golf-course designer.
Jack was named GolfWorld’s Architect of the Year in 1993, and in 1999; Golf Digest named him the world’s leading active designer. In February 2005, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America recognized Jack with its highest honor, The Old Tom Morris Award. In 2001, he was named recipient of both the Donald Ross Award (American Society of Golf Course Architects) and the Donald Rossi Award (Golf Course Builders Association of America), and was honored with the International Network of
Golf’s Achievement in Golf Course Design Award in 2000-2001.

Since 1962, Jack has added the moniker of
“businessman” to his lengthy resumé. He is
chairman of the privately held Nicklaus Companies. Last October, Golf Inc. magazine ranked Jack “The Most Powerful Person in Golf” for the fifth consecutive year, due to his impact on various aspects of the industry through his course design work, marketing and licensing business, and his involvement on a national level with various charitable causes. He was also named “Golf Development Newsmaker of the Year” for 2005 by Golf Inc., and the Robb Report once named Jack the “Leading Power Player” in the golf market.
In just over a four-week period ending last May, Jack received three Lifetime Achievement Awards in three different countries, as he was honored by the China Golf Association, then received the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award, and, finally, was presented the KPMG Golf Business Forum’s Lifetime Achievement Award on May 13 in Dublin, Ireland, before close to 350 industry leaders and developers representing more than 30 countries.
In January 2008, Jack was recognized for his global impact through design as well as his philanthropic efforts at home, when he was presented with The Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship. With its Woodrow Wilson Awards, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars recognizes leaders in business and public service from around the world and across the political spectrum. The Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship is given to executives who exemplify a commitment to the common good—beyond the bottom line—and who demonstrate that private firms should be stellar citizens in their own neighborhoods, as well as in the world.
Jack and his wife Barbara have a long history of involvement in numerous charitable activities, from junior golf to children’s hospitals to several scholarship foundations. Jack and Barbara are the guiding light for the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, which supports numerous pediatric health-care services in a five-country area, including Palm Beach County. On the golf side, Jack and fellow Hall-of-Famer Juli Inkster are national
co-chairpersons of The First Tee program’s “More Than A Game” capital campaign. Because of their contributions to golf and to community, Barbara and Jack were honored twice in 2007—the first being The Boys Scouts of America Distinguished Citizens Award, and then the Francis Ouimet Lifelong Contributions to Golf Award, which drew close to 2,200 people to Boston to set a record for a sports function in New England.

The construction of Central America’s most prestigious and scenic golf course, personally guided by the hand and eye of legend Jack Nicklaus, is under way at Isla Viveros.
In December, the Golden Bear took his design team for his first-ever trip to Panama, and then to Isla Viveros to survey the initial course routing that had been created from this island jungle, according to the preliminary design.
From the moment the team and Viveros management staff arrived on the island, Nicklaus took command, as he has done so many times during his playing and design career. He even insisted on driving the lead site vehicle, as the group set out to tackle the first jungle-hemmed nine fairways.
Seated alongside him, holding the field book of the Signature Course, was Senior Design Associate Chet Williams. When they arrived at a stake marking the location of a future tee, Nicklaus, clad in shorts, t-shirt and field boots, climbed from behind the wheel and strode confidently along the embryonic fairway, studying topography, sight lines and potential hazards, with the same eye for detail and challenge that made him a legend as a player, and now the acclaimed world leader in designing golf courses.
His personal involvement is the mark of a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, which has him literally walking the course, studying every angle for playability, as he had done on the way to fashioning the most decorated golf career in history.
On this day, he was trailed by a group of admirers, from
construction workers to Viveros management to a television crew. He also had alongside him his design team, including son Jack Nicklaus II. But his eye was on the ball of the future, to be played by golfers who will welcome a challenge, but will also look for an enjoyable day out.
He quickly noted approaches that needed to be changed, and a hole direction here or there that needed to be tweaked. He even suggested relocating a pair of fairways to make the course more playable for the average golfer, and provide space for homes that would have views of the ocean and the golf course in two directions.

La construcción del más prestigioso y escénico campo de golf de América Central personalmente guiado por la mano y los ojos de la leyenda golfista que es Jack Nicklaus, ya se está construyendo en Isla Viveros.
En diciembre, el Golden Bear trajo su equipo de diseñadores en su primer viaje a Panamá y después a la isla, para inspeccionar el terreno que ha sido creado en la jungla siguiendo el diseño preliminar.

During his first visit to Panama, Jack Nicklaus explained to a waiting TV crew the meaning of a “Signature Golf Course,” as opposed to the globally recognized Nicklaus Design-branded courses.
“The difference,” Nicklaus said, “is my personal involvement during the construction period.”
Nicklaus will visit the construction site at regular intervals to provide the necessary input to keep the golf course progressing at the desired schedule. This input covers all stages of the design process and could include changes to the initial design that may alter sight lines, approaches to the green, or the location of tees.
“On any Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, I design the course,” Nicklaus explained. “For a Nicklaus Design golf course, the team I have trained and provided a philosophy on what I believe is the best way to create a golf experience designs the course. I am not personally involved.”
The course at Isla Viveros will have the personal Signature of Jack Nicklaus and, in addition, he will be working in close collaboration with his son, Jack Nicklaus II, who is president of Nicklaus Design and has been involved in the creation of 35 courses around the world.
Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses have been credited for elevating and enhancing the relationship between golf and luxury home communities. Since independent research began in the early 1990s, communities that feature a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course as an amenity have resulted in the highest real estate value, the highest average home price, and the greatest velocity of home and lot sales.
The survey also included the impact on membership fees, annual dues and greens fees. When all data was combined, a “net present value” was determined for each golf course designer, and Jack Nicklaus was the overall and overwhelming No. 1 choice.
With the name Nicklaus behind a golf course, its value is enhanced tremendously. And that value will only grow with time. |

Durante su primera visita a Panamá, Jack Nicklaus le explicó a un equipo de televisión el significado de un campo de golf con “Sello” (Signature), el cual es totalmente diferente a los ya
famosos campos de golf diseñados por Nicklaus Design.
“La diferencia es que yo estoy involucrado personalmente durante el periodo de construcción,” dijo Nicklaus.
Esto significa, que él visita los sitios de construcción regularmente e insiste en hacer cambios que podrían alterar las líneas de vista, formas de aproximar al green, la ubicación de los tiros y otros detalles, vistos a través de los ojos del maestro del juego y del diseño.
