When Jack Nicklaus is involved you know that “world class” is not just an empty expresssion. The Golden Bear who is enshrined in most golfers’ minds as the greatest player of all time, is now regarded as the world’s best designer of golf courses, and during the coming months his talent will be focused on IslaViveros. Where a permit to start work has been issued.
 He has designed a course that will challenge players of all levels, whether playing off the back or front tees, and wherever they are there will be spectacular views that Jack thinks could make the course an ideal location for a made for TV golfing event.
To get a deeper insight into some of the challenges and joys of playing Isla Viveros we put some questions to Jack.
What will make the Isla Viveros course unique in the area?
JACK: With any golf course, it is the site and the existing terrain that determines its initial personality and uniqueness. With Isla Viveros, the golf course will be located on a small portion of the island and surrounded by water. With the amount of elevation that exists on the property, this golf course will afford spectacular views of the ocean and the rest of the Pearl Island chain as it looks over the residential portion that is situated below the course and along the island edge.
What hole lengths have you planned?
JACK: The hole lengths could and will likely change throughout the design and construction process. But, based on the current routing, there will be four teeing areas, and that should accommodate golfers of all skill levels. The yardage will be 7,166 yards from the back tees, and then drop, accordingly to 6,616, 6,064 and 5,151 yards from the forward tees. The longest par 4 will be 469 yards and the shortest par 4 will be 336 yards.
One hole plays over water I believe?
JACK: You are probably thinking of the par-3 16th hole that plays over part of the beach and ocean. That hole will likely play 212 yards from the back tee.
Which holes will be the most challenging?
JACK: That is difficult to say at this point, because most of the design strategy will evolve as the construction on the course progresses. Even later in the construction process it can still be a hard question to answer, because often the ability of a golfer or the type of game he or she plays can determine if a hole is more challenging to one person than another.
How should a scratch golfer, or a high handicap player approach them?
JACK: A good golf hole will accommodate, entertain and challenge every type of player. For the better golfer, the greens will be relatively small to keep the golf course challenging. Yet for the higher-handicap player, there will be plenty of bail-out areas around the greens to collect any errant shots and give that golfer an opportunity to get up-and-down for par or bogey. For a golfer to truly enjoy a course, it is important that they choose the tees that match their ability level. At Isla Viveros, the distance between the teeing complexes will help give golfers of all skill levels the ability to play the same golf course we envision.
How have you used the topography to enhance the playing experience?
JACK: You have to understand that right now most of the work we have done as a team has been in the office. We have the routing determined, and I look forward to getting to Panama and Isla Viveros to begin the process of putting strategy to the design. That is when we will know how to best maximize the topography. I can tell you that the key to this site is the views out to the ocean, and by using the higher ground in the interior of the island, we can maintain those views over the housing, which is located below the course on the perimeter of the island. This would not be possible if it were not for the extensive elevation changes that exist on site.
Which holes are likely to give spectacular views).
JACK: It could be all 18 holes, depending on the direction you are looking, but at least 12 to 14 holes will have great views in the direction of play.
What should the average club golfer look out for in the way of sandtraps?
JACK: Although we approach every design with a unique style, we do often implement a second-shot strategy that follows a risk/reward philosophy of hazard placement. By that, I mean that the closer you play to the bunkers or other hazards, the better the angle into the green or easier the shot will be into the green.
Is there one particular club I should be sure to carry?
JACK: If we have done our job, we hope golfers have the opportunity to use most every club in their bag, because that means we have accomplished a variety of shot values.
What will the view from the club house encompass?
JACK: The clubhouse will be located on top of a hill that overlooks the 10th, 11th and 18th holes. No matter how the clubhouse is situated—and this has not been finalized yet—the views should look out over golf holes and to the ocean beyond.

¿Qué debe esperar el típico golfista de club en lo que respecta a las trampas de arena?
JACK: A pesar de que nosotros aproximamos el diseño de cada campo de golf de manera diferente, con frecuencia aplicamos la estrategia de la segunda oportunidad que seguimos con la filosofía de riesgo / recompensa dependiendo del peligro que represente donde se coloca la bola. ¿Qué tipo de vistas tendrá la casa club?
JACK: La casa club estará ubicada arriba de un cerro que tendrá vistas de los hoyos 10, 11 y 18. No importa donde coloquemos la casa club, y esto todavía no ha sido finalizado, tendrá vistas panorámicas de los hoyos y del océano.
